Frequently Asked Questions about Gas Fireplaces

  • How Often Should I Have my Fireplace Serviced?
    • Your fireplace should be serviced yearly by a professional technician.
  • Should I leave my pilot light on in the summer when I’m not using it?
    • It’s up to you. However, running the pilot light year round will extend the lifespan of the generator by not allowing condensation and corrosion to build up inside.
  • How do I relight my pilot?
    • Open the lower grill and locate the black on/off pilot knob. Turn the knob to the pilot position, push in the knob all the way and hold it in. Then, press the red button that is to the right-hand side; the pilot will light if you push this button on two times. Continue to hold the black knob in for at least 20 seconds after the pilot has been lit. Release the black knob and the pilot will remain lit. Turn the black knob all the way counter-clockwise to the on position. (This doesn’t apply to every fireplace but most.)
  • Will the glass door of my fireplace/insert stay clean?
    • Most models are designed with a unique airwash system that forces air in front of the glass to keep the flame exhaust away. This keeps the door looking clean a lot longer. Over a period of time, you might need to clean the glass.
  • Can I add a remote control to my logset after it has been installed?
    • Yes. You can easily add a remote to vented or vent-free log sets already equipped with millivolt valves. Vented sets without millivolt valves can also be converted to remote operation by adding a remote capable valve, such as the latch top, millivolt or variable flame height valves.
  • I have a vented log set and the logs have black soot on them. Is this normal?
    • Soot build up on vented gas logs is a normal part of the combustion process and usually adds to the realism of your log set. Natural gas log sets generally produce less soot than liquid propane log sets. Sooting is not normal on a vent free gas log set and if soot is present, the set should be inspected by a professional to verify if it is operating properly.
  • What should I do if I smell gas?
    • Natural gas has no odor of it’s own so gas companies add an odorant as a safety precaution. The distinctive odor intentionally smells bad to immediately signal a possible gas leak.
