Valuable Information About World Water Day

world-waterIf you love our planet, then you’ll want to listen up about World Water Day, which is happening on March 22. This is a day that is celebrated internationally to help educate the public about water scarcity and water conservation. Water is a limited resource that is vital to our lives, which is why we all need to take steps to rectify the growing water crisis.

Water Conservation

water-dropAlthough you only need about 12 gallons of water a day for survival, the average American uses about 158. And most of that is because people aren’t paying attention to how much or how often they use water.

Here are some easy ways to cut down on your water use at home.

Don’t run the hose while washing your car. Better yet, go to a self-serve car wash that recycles water. Don’t point the sprinkler at the gutters or your driveway. Help the water do its job without waste. If you are running a hose outside, set a kitchen timer to remind yourself to turn it off. Use a watering can instead of a hose to water the garden.

Fill a bottle with water and leave it in the fridge so that you don’t have to run the tap to get a drink of water. Inspect fridge ice maker hoses to make sure that they aren’t leaking. Making pasta tonight? Keep the cooking liquid to water your plants.

If you need to have a bath, don’t fill the tub all the way and be sure to put the plug in as soon as you turn the water on. Turn the tap off while brushing your teeth. Don’t rinse your razor under the tap. Fill the sink a little and do it there instead.

General Plumbing Conservation Tips

wasting-waterIt’s worthwhile bringing your plumber in to do a thorough check on your plumbing for leaks. According to the EPA, the average American household leaks waste 10,000 gallons a year, which is the same as doing 270 loads of laundry. That’s a lot of water.

Have the plumber tend to leaky faucets, pipes, and toilets. If you are really serious about reducing your water use, install aerators in your faucets to help with water flow; also consider low-flow shower heads and toilets which are energy and water use efficient.

Facts Around World Water Day

According to the UN, 70 percent of the water in developing countries is contaminated. That means that 783 million people don’t have access to clean water and 2.4 million don’t have access to proper sanitation; as a result, water-borne diseases proliferate and are often lethal. It is estimated that between 6 and 8 million people die every year from water-related problems.

The seriousness of this situation is why the UN started World Water Day in 1993. It is an ongoing problem that requires swift action by people all over the world to help reverse the trend.
